About the Role

Senior / Principal Mining Engineer

An internationally recognised, independent mining consultancy is seeking an experienced Senior / Principal Mining Engineer to join its growing Johannesburg team.

This is an outstanding opportunity for a technically strong mining engineer with extensive open-pit mining experience and a passion for delivering high-quality mining studies, feasibility assessments and strategic advisory services to a diverse portfolio of mining clients.

We are specifically seeking candidates with practical operational mine site experience, complemented by strong technical expertise in mine planning, mine design, scheduling and feasibility studies. Previous experience within a mining consultancy and proficiency in Datamine and/or Deswik will be highly advantageous.

The Role

As a Senior / Principal Mining Engineer, you will lead and deliver mining engineering projects from concept through to feasibility, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative and practical mining solutions.

The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, mentor junior engineers, manage client relationships and contribute to business development while supporting projects across various commodities and jurisdictions.

Mining Engineering & Technical Leadership

  • Lead open-pit mining studies from concept through pre-feasibility and feasibility.
  • Develop and review mine designs, production schedules and life-of-mine plans.
  • Prepare technical reports and mining studies to international standards.
  • Conduct mining optimisation, pit design and production planning.
  • Evaluate mining methods, equipment selection and operational strategies.
  • Ensure technical quality and accuracy across all project deliverables.

Project Management

  • Manage multidisciplinary mining studies and consulting projects.
  • Coordinate engineering inputs across geology, geotechnical, metallurgy, processing and infrastructure disciplines.
  • Deliver projects safely, on schedule and within budget.
  • Manage client expectations and project reporting.

Operational Support

  • Apply practical mine site experience to improve project outcomes.
  • Provide operational mining support and technical advice to clients.
  • Identify operational improvements and optimisation opportunities.
  • Translate operational experience into robust engineering solutions.

Business Development

  • Develop and maintain strong client relationships.
  • Contribute to proposals, tenders and technical presentations.
  • Identify new consulting opportunities.
  • Support the continued growth of the mining consulting business.

Leadership & Mentoring

  • Mentor graduate and junior mining engineers.
  • Provide technical guidance across project teams.
  • Promote engineering excellence and continuous improvement.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering (Essential).
  • Professional registration or eligibility for registration will be advantageous.

Experience

  • 5–10+ years’ mining engineering experience.
  • Proven open-pit mining experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in mine planning, mine design and production scheduling.
  • Strong feasibility study experience (Scoping, PFS and FS).
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary mining projects.
  • Previous mining consulting experience highly advantageous.
  • Practical operational mine site experience is highly preferred.
  • Experience across greenfield and brownfield mining projects advantageous.
